You may end up with moldy clothes!
These unsightly spots of brown, grey, black, or green can also develop if you leave wet clothes or towels lurking in a heap at the bottom of the laundry basket, or store fabrics in a damp place. Thankfully, it’s not too difficult to remove mold on clothes.
Once you’ve discovered mold on clothes, the treatment depends on how old the mold stains are as well as the type of fabric. Fresh mold stains can often be removed simply by laundering with a good quality detergent. Bleach is the most effective way to remove mold and mildew from clothing made out of white cotton, Joyce says. Apply a solution of one part bleach to three parts water to the stain and allow the solution to sit for a few minutes, then launder the clothing as usual.
Several different solutions can work to remove mold and mildew from clothing, but here are some general suggestions to follow.
A very strong chemical, bleach can be very effective at killing mold and removing mildew stains. However, it will also fade any colors, so use bleach only on whites, or test your garment first on an inconspicuous part of your clothing (such as the inside hem). Buying a commercial bleaching detergent saves you from having to mix your bleach and water solution; but if you do decide to dilute your neat bleach, follow the instructions on the label of your chosen product to get the concentration right.
If your clothes are colorfast, you can pre-soak the moldy clothing for a few hours in a solution of bleach, mixed according to the instructions on the label. Alternatively, follow the instructions to add the bleach to your washing machine and launder as normal. When using bleach, be sure to wear rubber gloves and work in a well-ventilated area away from any children, as the fumes can be quite strong.
Vinegar is an excellent mild mold-killer, and also removes mildew smells from your clothing. Mix one cup of white vinegar in a bucket of water, and pre-soak the clothing for at least an hour. Then launder in your washing machine at the hottest temperature possible with your regular detergent, such as Persil Non-Bio.
Alternatively, you can directly add 250 ml of vinegar to your washing machine per cycle and wash as normal. You mustn\’t mix vinegar with any product that contains bleach, as this can create a toxic gas.
This water-soluble mineral is also a natural mold-killer, which you can buy as a detergent or in powder form. If you get it as a powder, mix it with water as per the instructions on the label. Then add the solution directly into the drum of your washing machine, and launder the clothes as normal.
For old stains, everyday household soap, either liquid or in bar form, can be rubbed indirectly and rinsed out with water. Then set out the fabric to dry in the sun.
Mix 1 part 20% hydrogen peroxide with 4 parts water to create a solution. This should only be used on organic fabrics (cotton, linen, etc.) that aren’t flame-resistant or don’t have easy-care finishes.
Mold can begin to grow on clothes when left damp in a pile. To avoid this you should:
Mold is a fact of life; however, you don’t have to suffer from this problem. Mold and mildew stains can pop up just about anywhere. Whether you decide to choose a homemade remedy or a commercial mildew remover for fabric, cleaning mold and mildew stains gives your fabric renewed life.
If you find mold on your clothes you should remove it as soon as possible. One reason to clean away mold and a sign that you might have mold on your clothes is the symptoms it can cause. If you\’re wearing clothes with mold on them you may feel itchiness where the mold is contacting your skin and develop a rash. The clothing might also make you sneeze when you wear it.
Another reason to remove mold from clothes quickly is the damage it can do to your clothing. Mold digests whatever material it\’s growing on so long-term mold growth will destroy clothing. As mold grows larger it will also leave a greater stain on your clothing which can be difficult to remove and the clothes will smell.
Finally, mold on clothes releases mold spores into the air of your home which can promote mold growing inside. Additionally, a buildup of spores in your home\’s air can cause you to suffer allergic symptoms while you are inside your houses such as sneezing and sore eyes.
