Warm, non-circulating air, a frequently damp surface, and a lack of direct sunlight promote mold growth. Add to that that it is not easily reachable, therefore not as likely to be cleaned regularly. One environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and chemical-free alternative to removing your problem without harmful chemicals is to use common white distilled vinegar.

If the mold on your bathroom ceiling covers ten square feet or less, it is considered a small area and you can take care of cleaning it on your own by following the correct procedures. The mold that covers more of your ceiling than this may require professional services.

How to remove mold from the bathroom ceiling?

These are the things you must do to eliminate mold from your bathroom ceiling. Molds on the bathroom ceiling are an eyesore and very disgusting. It makes one uncomfortable, so the best thing you can do is to get rid of them. Below are the things you will do:

(1) Buy a spray bottle

Purchase a good quality spray bottle with an adjustable nozzle or a small garden sprayer if you have a large ceiling to clean.

(2) Spray problem areas with vinegar

Fill the bottle with undiluted white vinegar and spray the problem areas. Spray the entire ceiling, not just the moldy areas, as the beginnings of an area of black mold growth are invisible to the naked eye. Let the undiluted vinegar soak for at least an hour, rinse, and repeat. This will start to remove the stains.

(3) Rinse with water

A second bottle with fresh warm water is helpful if you do not have a hand-held shower head to rinse with.

(4) Brush difficult areas and let them dry

After the second treatment, use a soft brush on any stubborn areas, rinse and dry. Be careful using a ladder on the shower floor, as it may be slippery. An electric leaf blower will hasten the drying process. For heavily textured or popcorn ceilings, gently blot the surface with a soft towel to avoid ruining the finish.

What other products can be used in removing mold from bathroom ceilings?

(1) Using Hydrogen Peroxide

This is used to remove and clean bathroom and shower mold. Many use Hydrogen Peroxide to kill and prevent mold and swear by this method. Better than bleach, which only irritates mold and does not kill the roots, 3%-6% Hydrogen Peroxide kills mold down to the roots and does a good job of dislodging the growth so you can rinse it away. It can be used in the same way as vinegar to wipe the mold off the ceiling. Soaking time is about the same, depending on the seriousness of the growth.

As with vinegar, or any other liquid cleaning chemical, you should never mix it with another cleaning agent! Two good cleaners combined will not make a super cleaner, but they can make you super sick. Remember to open doors and windows when cleaning and leave the room if you start to feel dizzy, experience watery eyes, or develop a headache. Wear rubber gloves when using this or any other cleaning method where chemicals may encounter your skin. Safety glasses are also recommended.

(2) Using baking soda and borax

For stubborn stains, mix two parts of Baking Soda with one part vinegar and one part water. Spread the thick mixture on a moldy area and let it dry. Gently scrub the mixture, rinse, or wipe clean and repeat if necessary. This method works well on ceilings, where a liquid may drip off onto the floor or into your eyes. Borax is also another powder-form chemical that can be used to get rid of mold.

Mix one part borax (NOT Boric Acid) to 16 parts water, or one cup to a gallon of water for spray applications. Use a thicker mixture on surfaces where you don’t want to use much water, such as drywall or hard-to-dry fabrics.

How to treat the ceiling?

After you clean the ceiling, you\\’ll also want to treat it to kill any remaining spores and reduce the likelihood that a mold problem will develop again. Mix a solution of borate-based detergent (such as Borax) and apply it. This solution should not be rinsed but left to stop mold from growing in the future. Borates have stain removal properties and control bacteria and fungi.

How do control the conditions?

Removing the mold from your ceiling and treating the area doesn\\’t mean that you will never have a problem again. Mold spores grow on almost any kind of surface when moisture is present. Once you clean the mold from your bathroom ceiling, it\\’s important to remove the moisture problem to make sure it doesn\\’t come back.

To do this, you\\’ll want to determine the reason mold-producing moisture was collected in the bathroom in the first place. A few things you can do to keep mold growth to a minimum include:

If pipes run through your ceiling be sure to check for and repair any plumbing leaks. Pipes may need to be wrapped to prevent condensation.

Open doors and windows to increase airflow. If you don\\’t have a window in your bathroom, install an exhaust fan.

Clean your bathroom regularly to eliminate any mold spores.

What to do after you clean the mold?

It is important to realize that the fact that your ceiling looks clean after you clean it doesn\\’t mean that lingering mold spores won\\’t survive. You will need to treat the ceiling after you have cleaned it and take steps to correct the problems in your bathroom that contributed to mold growth in the first place.

How to clean mold from the bathroom ceiling?

Wash the area with a cleaning solution of mild detergent and warm water.

Let the affected area dry.

Mix one-quarter cup of bleach with one quart of water and apply the solution.

Wait for 20 minutes and apply a second time.

Allow another 20 minutes to dry.

What are the steps to take before cleaning bathroom ceiling mold?

Close off vents so spores cannot spread to other areas of the home during the cleaning process.

Open a window

Why does mold grow on the bathroom ceiling?

Bathrooms are excellent places to grow some of your home’s worst enemies: mold and mildew. Excess moisture in your bathroom (or other areas of your home) causes mold and mildew to grow. Mold and mildew only need oxygen, a food source, and moisture to grow. Mold and mildew can damage the fixtures of the bathroom such as the drywall, trim, paint, doors, ceilings, and more because the mold and mildew, these fixtures are a food source.

Most building codes now require a fan in every bathroom. Why? Because fans help ventilate the room, remove bad smells, and remove moisture. The most important function of the fan is to remove moisture. Even if the bathroom has a window, a fan is the best way to prevent moisture buildup.

Bathroom walls and showers are the perfect environments for growing black mold.
